La Mina Falls in El Yunque National Rainforest
On September 20, Category 4 Hurricane Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico. Maria left the entire island ravaged, flooded and entirely in the dark. 100% of the island lost power, 95% of the communication towers was destroyed & 90% were left without running water. It was days before images & videos began surfacing of the devastation that is left behind.
Imagine a world where all your commodities & luxuries have been stripped away. Challenge every aspect of yourself. How would you manage without the proper shelter, food, water, transport & communication? Would you fight for survival or would you build a neighboring community? When you’ve lost it all, what do you gain by holding on to your ego? Without urgency, we’re quick to forget that there is power in numbers.
This is not my average work, but an out pour of emotions. I’ve dilly dallied for the last two weeks on what tips, tricks & pics to share with you. My heart trumped. You see my roots lie deep in the island full of history, culture & passion. Puerto Rico was once vividly known as the island of enchantment. Who could imagine such a small island (100 miles x 35 miles) full of so much folklore, diversity and adventure? So much devastation has occurred in the past few weeks; not just in Puerto Rico, but all across the world.
It’s important that we remind ourselves that feeding the human spirit is as important as nourishing your body: staying alive through community by utilizing positive motions and distractions. If we’re only grateful for the big things in life; we’re sure to miss out on all the little things. If we shared as much good as we do the bad, the world would be an entirely different place.
My family & I have donated to relief efforts in Puerto Rico & Mexico. If you’d like to donate to any cause, that’s completely at your discretion. If you can’t donate financially; thoughts, prayers, & good vibes are equally well taken. My intentions are to remind everyone to build a strong community; whether it be physically, mentally, emotionally or spiritually.
I'd love to hear from you. Feel free to write, chat or comment below. If you'd like to donate, but are unsure where. Please ask. I'll be more than happy to supply you with links.
